What is Hypersexualization?
"The inappropriate imposition of sexuality upon a person, whether through objectification... or sexual behaviour."
All genders are sexualized; women are hypersexualized, shown in positions of submissiveness. Subjected in mainstream media - advertisement, movie, TV etc, portrayed in a way which will satisfy a heterosexual male audience.
Society puts the most value on heterosexual males, so ads are made to attract them - even if product is not typically for men.
Portrayal of Males
Men posed in positions of power; something for straight males to aspire to, not to lust after like sexualized women. If a male is shown in a frame with a woman he is almost, always, shown in a position of dominance. Woman are pressurised to look like women in advertisements; wholly unrealistic.
Sexualization can cause many mental heath issues, with links to various eating disorders, unrealistic body aspirations and linked to idealised body image and feelings of inadequacy.
Hypersexualization research is proven to cause the dehumanisation of women, reduces women to "bust and butt" representation,it leads to increased feelings of shame about one's body, it creates appearance anxiety.
These are some of the factors associated with hypersexulization, and with this project I aim to further examine this in greater detail.
